Venetsa Cave is one of the beautiful gems of Northwestern Bulgaria. Its name comes from the Bulgarian word for “wreath” or “crown,” and it truly deserves it – often described as the crown jewel among the region’s caves because of its impressive rock formations.
Silistar Beach is one of my favorite beaches on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Without any buildings and picturesque, it is not only a beach, but also a very beautiful place. The bay has blue and clear waters, very pleasant for swimming. I was truly enchanted when I first visited it more than 20 years ago – it somehow reminded me of the sea from my childhood. Then, and in the following few years, not many people were sunbathing there, it was not occupied with concession umbrellas, there were not even lifeguards.
Veleka Beach is among the most picturesque beaches on the Bulgarian Southern Black Sea Coast. It is located in the northern part of the village of Sinemorets at the confluence of the Veleka River into the Black Sea. The beach is huge and there is enough space for everyone. The landscape is beautiful – completely natural and without concrete. However, the bay is quite deep. You enter the sea, take two steps and you no longer step on the bottom.
Lipite Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, still almost untouched. The reason is that there’s no road access by car. It lies in a picturesque bay with crystal-clear waters, not far from Butamyata Beach in Sinemorets. The sand is fine, and at the back, the beach meets the dense forests of Strandzha.
Kaliakra Cape. High, windy, and rocky, cutting 2 kilometers into the sea off the coast of Kavarna. One of the most picturesque places on the Northern Black Sea Coast. I have been to the cape so many times, but I will never get tired of returning there.
Troyan in Bulgaria is a picturesque mountain town in the Central Stara planina Mountains. I have passed through the town and its surroundings many times, and I have stayed in the area several times. My last visit took place on a gloomy June day. It happened on the rainiest possible weekend that spring. However, I saw several interesting places that were new to me and others that I already knew.
In the article below, I’ll introduce you to the main sights in and around Troyan, all based on my personal experience. At the end, you’ll also find tips on where to eat and where to stay.
Musala Peak (2925 m) is the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula and it is located in Rila Mountain, Bulgaria. Climbing Mount Musala (2925 m) is achievable for almost anyone, but preparation is mandatory. In this article I will describe the route to Musala Peak and will share how to prepare for climbing it, emphasizing that this is a summer climb – in seasons without snow cover.
Dokuzak Waterfall is the most powerful and abundant waterfall in the Strandzha Mountains. We visited at the end of July, when it was especially impressive, with water cascading forcefully down the rocks and surrounded by lush greenery. We spent three wonderful days near the town of Malko Tarnovo, exploring the beauty of the region, and one of the places we visited there was the waterfall. Yes, Strandzha is famous for the many remains of Thracian sanctuaries and shrines and the waterfall somehow doesn’t fit in very well among them, but it is a fact. It is not the only waterfall in Strandzha, but the other known ones have a rather modest watershed.
Bolata Beach is an amazingly beautiful place on the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, near the village of Bulgarevo. The beach is a small bay, surrounded by high cliffs almost in a semicircle. Behind the sandy strip there is a marsh with rich vegetation and interesting birds. On one side, the beach is cut by a small river that flows into the sea. Seen from above from the cliffs, the beach looks like a seashell.
Hotnitsa Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Veliko Tarnovo region. We first visited it and hiked along the picturesque eco-trail along it 10 years ago. Captivated even then by the beauty of the waterfall and the entire area, we returned there more than once. All the relatives and friends we took there over the years to see it remained enchanted.
