Bolata beach: a true maritime grace

Bolata Beach is an amazingly beautiful place on the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, near the village of Bulgarevo. The beach is a small bay, surrounded by high cliffs almost in a semicircle. Behind the sandy strip there is a marsh with rich vegetation and interesting birds. On one side, the beach is cut by a small river that flows into the sea. Seen from above from the cliffs, the beach looks like a seashell.

I personally have a special relation with Bolata Beach – apart from the fact that we have sunbathed there many times, my first kayaking adventure happened just there, as well as one of the following ones 🙂 .

Brief information about Bolata Beach

Bolata is a sea bay with a natural beach, near the village of Bulgarevo, located north of Cape Kaliakra. There is a former military station nearby. High limestone reddish cliffs rise along the bay. A small river forms a narrow gorge and a marsh, just before it flows into the sea.

The bay is quite shallow near the shore, which makes it a preferred place for people with small children.

The Bolata area is a wetland of importance for several rare plant and animal species. Via Pontica, the second most important migratory route of wild birds in Europe, passes over it. Bolata is part of the Kaliakra Reserve – one of three protected areas in Bulgaria that include an aquatic area. The other two are Chengene Skele near Burgas and Koketrais near Nessebar. Of the three, only Kaliakra is a reserve.

Being part of a protected area, camping is not allowed on and around Bolata Beach. May be there were people who did it, but it is illegal and they are subject to sanctions.

Where is and how to get to Bolata Beach

Bolata Beach is located 6 km southeast of the melon village of Bulgarevo, 78 km northeast of our seaside capital Varna and 63 km from its regional center Dobrich. You can get to the beach by car. There is a parking lot next to it.

You can also get to the beach by bike – the distance from the village of Bulgarevo is relatively short.

When is the best time to visit

If you just want to walk to Bolata Beach, you can do it all year round. For sunbathing, I recommend the months of June and September. At the height of the summer tourist season – July and August – the beach is crowded. It is still small and does not have a large capacity.

My first visit there took place in mid-May 10 years ago. Our focus then was the kayaks, but after them I did not miss getting sunburned and swimming in the sea, although the water temperature was about 15 degrees. We were the only ones on the beach at that very moment.

Years later we spent our seaside vacation in Kavarna and went to Bolata to sunbathe. It was early July and it was relatively quiet on weekdays, but it was full on the weekend.

Where to stay

The nearest settlement to Bolata Beach is the village of Bulgarevo. There you will find cozy guest houses and family hotels. I have wonderful impressions of Guest House Levana.

The nearest town is Kavarna, only 14 km away. There are also various accommodation options there, with my favorite being Guest House Nash Dom with a rating of 9.3 on the Booking website. For current prices, availability and reservations, see here.

The nearest large resort is Albena. For accommodation options, see here.

Walk to the cliffs above the beach

Besides sunbathing, you can also take a walk to the high cliffs above Bolata Beach. The path to them begins with concrete steps from the road shortly after the parking lot. The path is short and will take you to the top of the cliffs in a few minutes. Keep in mind, however, that it is overgrown in places. It is a good idea to wear comfortable shoes and be careful while climbing. Also take sunscreen if you are on the cliffs in strong sunlight. If you decide to climb at dusk, be sure to protect yourself against the swarms of bloodthirsty mosquitoes there at dusk.

The view from above is amazing.

You can also climb to the cliffs opposite for a new portion of views, but from a different angle. Consider the same recommendations there.

Kayaking around Bolata Beach

I have mentioned several times about the kayak tours we have had over the years. The first was ten years ago on a route from Bolata Beach along Cape Kaliakra to Zelenka Beach. The second one took place a few years later. Then we paddled from Bolata to Cape Kaliakra and back. Kayaking is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the natural scenery from the water.

Other landmarks nearby

If you plan to go to the Bolata Beach area, be sure to plan a visit to the iconic Cape Kaliakra, one of the most beautiful places on the Bulgarian Northern Black Sea coast. I also recommend:

  • Yaylata: archaeological reserve near the village of Kamen Bryag;
  • The Arch and the Hole: rock formations near Tyulenovo;
  • Balchik Palace and Botanical Garden.
