Ledenika Cave is one of the most popular attractions near Vratsa. It is a place you should definitely visit if you are planning to explore the area. And very close to Ledenika Cave, you can also enjoy a pleasant nature trail. In this article, I’ll tell you about both.

Ledenika Cave
Ledenika Cave has been one of the most popular landmarks around Vratsa for several decades. The cave was opened to visitors in 1961 and is part of Bulgaria’s list of 100 National Tourist Sites.
The cave is open year-round, with guided tours starting every hour on the hour.
Where is Ledenika Cave?
Ledenika Cave is located about 16 km west of Vratsa and can be reached by car via a paved road. There are brown tourist signs pointing the way, and a large parking area has been built near the cave.
Hiking enthusiasts can also reach Ledenika Cave on foot. The route starts at the Vratsata Pass and takes around three hours, with a considerable elevation gain along the way.

A few words about the cave
Several years ago, an entertainment park was developed near the Ledenika Cave, including a visitor center, an amphitheater, a climbing wall, and a themed fairy-tale park featuring characters from popular stories.

The entrance to Ledenika Cave is located at an altitude of 830 meters. The cave is 320 meters long and has 10 chambers, the most famous of which is the Concert Hall. Underground concerts are held there from time to time.
The temperature inside the cave is around 8°C, while the temperature in the entrance area can range from –7°C to 15°C, depending on the season.
Regardless of the time of year, make sure you wear comfortable shoes with good, sturdy soles and bring a warm outer layer when visiting Ledenika Cave.
During the tour, you will pass through several chambers and see fascinating cave formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and stalactons. However, the cave’s name does not come from its typical cave formations. It comes from the beautiful ice formations that form in winter in its two entrance galleries when temperatures drop below freezing.

“Karst and Biodiversity” Nature Trail
A visit to Ledenika Cave can easily be combined with the nearby Karst Trail. The trail starts close to the cave entrance, where you will find a large information board.
The trail is easy and pleasant to walk, but don’t head out in flip-flops! Wear closed, comfortable shoes suitable for a hike.
The route is circular and winds through the forest around Ledenika Cave, making it particularly pleasant on hot summer days. It is 3.2 km long and marked with wooden arrows and some rather faded blue trail markings. The path itself is easy to follow and well established.

We completed the route in about an hour of actual walking time, not counting breaks. There are several small rest areas along the way, each with a table and two benches. You could easily bring some food and have a picnic here. There is no water available along the route, though, so make sure you bring your own.
Several information boards along the trail provide interesting facts about karst landscapes in general and the Vratsa Karst in particular. They also highlight the remarkable biodiversity of the area.
We walked the trail on a hot summer day and found the shade of the forest wonderfully refreshing. The trail is suitable for all seasons, but personally, I think it must be especially beautiful in late spring, when many wildflowers are in bloom.
