Sitovo Waterfall – water beauty in the Western Rhodopes

Sitovo waterfall is among the most beautiful waterfalls in Bulgaria. It pours water into the Rhodope Mountains, also know as the Mountain with a soul. Its pattern is extremely picturesque – two low, but quite wide falls, and a wonderful ending is the arch of the bridge, rising above the falls like a wreath. The space around the waterfall is enclosed by the steep banks of the Sitovska River. The pine trees on the sides and the moss on the river stones contrast with their green shades and together with the water splashes in the air create an incredible feeling of freshness.

During our visit in February, the waterfall impressed us with its so raging waters. Well, that was not so accidental. The period from the end of February to April – May is the most suitable for visiting waterfalls, because of the snowmelt that feeds them.

Sitovo waterfall gets its name for the nearby village of Sitovo. It is also quite interesting as its houses are made of stone and preserved the old local Rhodopes architecture. Against the backdrop of the steep slopes, they look as if they are perched on top of each other. In the central part of the village stands its stone church “St. Petka”, apparently quite old. The village is located in the gorge of the Sitovska River on its two steep banks.

Two more landmarks can be seen in the area – the unsolved Sitovo rock inscription and the Thracian rock-cult complex of Shtutgrad.

How to get to Sitovo waterfall

Sitovo Waterfall is located about 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Plovdiv and 3 kilometers before the village of Sitovo. It is under the bridge at the junction for the village of Lilkovo. You will find a convenient place to park your car after the bridge. The waterfall is visible from the road. It takes a few minutes to descend to it along a short but extremely steep path that branches off to the right of the road just before the bridge over the river.
